About the memorial: The Village War Memorial is situated in the centre of the War Memorial Garden in High Road, Shillington. It takes the form of a Celtic Cross mounted on a stepped base and plinth. The names and the inscription are recessed on the plinth with lettering in black. In all 27 names are listed for World War 1 and 9 for World War 2. In 1985 the railings were painted, in 1988 the stonework cleaned, in 1989 the plinth was repaired and in 2009 the name of W A INGRAM, ROYAL ARTILLERY was added to the memorial. He died of peritonitis in 1946 and was buried overseas. The original memorial was unveiled by MP Mr M G Townley on 22nd August 1922. A £200 donation had been made to erect the memorial, the land was gifted to the Parish Council by Mrs. Hanscombe, mother of William Hanscombe then 'Lord of the Manor'. The memorial was the responsibility of the Shillington War Memorial Trustees. In 1967 a registered charity (254355) was established to take responsibility for the war memorial. Shillington Parish Council is the sole trustee of that registered charity.
